Comi-Con Floor

On Friday and Saturday, I will be making my annual pilgrimage to ‘Mecca’- the 40th Annual San Diego Comic Con. It’s the worlds largest comic book, TV, and movie event of the year. It has developed into the biggest pop culture phenominon with attendance upwards to 130-140 thousand! For me, it’s a very inspirational two days because I get to be fully emmersed in things I love and get some great bonding time with my good friends. So I will be offline for a couple of days but expect some fun pics and updates when I get back.

In honor of Comic Con, I want to post a previous article I wrote about having ‘Otaku”. Comic Con fans have crazy Otaku and it’s something we can learn from as creative leaders. To visit the Comic Con website.

Otaku is a Japanese term used to refer to people with obsessive interests.

Otaku is the interest or activity that you are always talking about. It’s the thing that you are willing to stand in line for hours to get. It’s the object that you are willing to go in debt for. Otaku has you buying books and searching online to read more about it. Your Otaku has you talking to your friends (or strangers) about it. You simply believe your Otaku is the best.

The iPhone has enormous Otaku following. Everywhere you go, you see people huddled around wondering at all its features. iPhone owners simply believe it’s the best. I believe the game ‘Settlers of Catan’ is simply the best board game invented. I tell everyone I know and try to get them to play. I believe that if you give me a chance, I can get you hooked on it. I also have a Battlestar Galactica Otaku. Give me 60 mins and I can get you hooked on it. Comic Con fans have SERIOUS Otaku. I have Otaku for many things- comic books, interior design, art, the church, Warhammer 40k, and more.

Creative Leaders must have Otaku. You need to have a driving passion to change the world around you. To make it a better place AND make it a more beautiful place. Your Otaku will drive you to not settle for mediocrity, not settle for the same, and not settle for predictable. Being known as a leader of Otaku is not easy. It takes time, money, energy, failure, creativity, and passion. Having Otaku quite simply means you are the best at Creativity. If you really are or not doesn’t matter- what matters is that your goal; to be the best. It may be at song writing, art, music, dance, poetry, or miming! Just be the best. Read more, see more, talk more, experience more than anyone else about your Creative Otaku. It will be exhausting and come at a sacrifice. The rewards can be summed up in one word; Influence. Creative Leaders must have influence for those around them, the environment and goals. But you can only have influence if you possess an Otaku.

Avoid the pitfall of ‘Jack of all trades, master of none’ dilemma. That is a pit of no return. Master your area. Discovering and embracing your Otaku is the key.
